Job Type: Permanent Full-Time (3 days on, 3 days off; 7am-7pm)

Pay: $27.00 per hour plus benefits

About the Role

We're looking for a Shift Supervisor to join our Shelter team at Alpha House. Shift Supervisors provide supervision and guidance to front line staff and are expected to assist the team as well as Program Managers with crisis management and critical incident debriefing. Shift Supervisors are also expected to provide direct care, support and services to clients in any program within Alpha House. Your responsibilities would include:

  • Interacting with clients in a caring, non-judgmental manner while providing client care
  • Address client concerns as part of the grievance procedure and escalate serious concerns to the Program Manager.
  • Offer training, coaching, mentorship, supervision, and first-level disciplinary action (e.g., verbal warnings, documented conversations, paid shift suspensions) to front-line staff
  • Respond to and act on concerns raised by staff, particularly those related to the Respectful Workplace Policy, Employee Complaints, and Vulnerable Adults Abuse Policy
  • Attend to crises with a focus on de-escalation and provide group and one-on-one debriefings for affected staff
  • Promote safety for staff and clients by staying current with safety protocols, accreditation requirements, and program audit standards
  • Report serious team functioning or staff-related issues to the Program Manager
  • Build and maintain strategic partnerships with other agencies, community partners, and stakeholders
  • Provide the Program Manager with timely updates, data, and statistics for funding and outcome reports
  • Supervise and assist with biohazard cleanup (e.g., bodily fluids) following established protocols to ensure proper disinfection
  • Conduct shift exchange meetings with oncoming staff
  • Ensure staff and client resources are available by preparing and submitting purchase orders
  • Ensure staff attend to clients' personal care needs in a respectful and dignified manner.
  • Demonstrate thorough knowledge of all policies and procedures and the ability to reference them from appropriate sources
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory standards (e.g., MSDS, OH&S, WHMIS), including maintaining cleanliness inside and outside the facility

About You

We are looking for an experienced Shift Supervisor to join our Shelter program. The ideal candidate would have the following:

  • Post-Secondary Education from a public educational institution, in a relevant field, minimum of a 2-year Diploma Program, Bachelor's degree preferred (those in progress may be considered)
  • A minimum of 1-year experience leading a team
  • A minimum of three years' experience related to the Indigenous, clients with addictions, mental health and/or homelessness
  • An understanding of addictions including: withdrawal management, harm reduction, stages of change, trauma informed care and recovery-oriented systems of care
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills and the ability to communicate with discretion and maintain confidentiality of clients, staff concerns & disciplinary procedures
  • Experience in facilitating and debriefing groups is an asset
  • Must be tolerant, non-judgmental with a high degree of compassion and empathy towards the homeless and those struggling with addictions and or mental health
  • Proven crisis management, problem solving skills, rapport-building and advocacy skills
  • Belief in harm reduction and housing first
  • Skilled in working within and leading teams

Position Requirements

  • Proof of being vaccinated against COVID
  • Alberta Class 5 (Non GDL) driver license
  • Be able to physically assist clients from prone to sitting or standing, and vice versa
  • Able to provide a Vulnerable Sector Search, valid within the last six months, that does not contain any results material to the position
  • Comfortable in working in an environment with the risk of violence and exposure to bodily fluids
  • Ability to complete FOIP & “It's your Move” training, or equivalent Patient Lift training
