POSITION PURPOSE: The Building Services Engineer is responsible for maintaining a safe and hazard-free environment for residents, staff and visitors of the Facility by performing necessary and scheduled/unscheduled maintenance and repairs and/or upkeep tasks of the physical building, and equipment.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Performs all tasks required in the day-to-day maintenance and upkeep of the physical building and equipment of the Facility which are within the certification capabilities of a 4th Class Stationary Engineer, including repairs to equipment and furniture, installation of equipment and fixtures and upkeep of grounds, as required.
  • Supervises, monitors and schedules the work and activities of contractors in the facility.
  • Plans and coordinates building maintenance of fire safety work in the facility ensuring coordination with all facility departments, residents, programs and activities.
  • Performs safety checks on all electrical equipment/personal use items brought into the Facility by residents (i.e. radios, televisions); maintains documentation of work performed.
  • Performs daily, weekly, monthly and annual building and fire safety inspection audits. Documents findings and performs/arranges required follow-up repairs/maintenance.
  • Uses maintenance equipment (i.e. welder, saws, drills) and supplies (chemicals) in a safe manner, according to manufacturers' directions
  • Maintains and keeps all preventative maintenance documentation and records.
  • Participates in staff in-service training and development programs within the Long Term Care Facility including, Occupational Health and Safety programs, Departmental meetings, Fire Safety and WHMIS training.
  • Acts as Fire Marshall and participates in fire safety/emergency situations as outlined in Facility Policies and Procedures.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 4th Class Stationary Engineer Certification or Secondary School Graduation Diploma and completion of Building & Environmental Systems Level I & II or equivalent combination of education and experience in a building related trades qualification certification such as Electrician, Plumber, HVAC Technician.
  • Minimum two (2) years of related building operations and maintenance experience in residential, commercial, institutional, or healthcare environment.
  • As a condition of employment, candidates will be required to provide a satisfactory Police Vulnerable Sector Check (PVSC), tuberculosis screening and proof of immunization in accordance with Fixing Long Term Care Act (FLTCA), 2021.
  • Successful candidate is required complete the annual required training as per FLTCA.
  • Knowledge of/or direct experience with computerized preventative maintenance programs.
  • Demonstrated ability in the Region's core competencies.
