Position Summary: The Director of Transportation will play a crucial role in leading, managing, and driving accountability for our drivers, both company and owner-operators. Reporting directly into the Vice President of Operations, this position requires a strong leader for six (6) direct reports, with extensive experience in the transportation industry, specifically in managing drivers, training, safety protocols, and equipment management. Responsibilities will include optimizing driver performance, ensuring compliance with safety regulations, and managing our fleet of tractors, trailers, scanners, and other transportation equipment. This position requires a decisive and results oriented leader, who fosters teamwork and positive employee relations and utilizes technical skills to influence, motivate change and meet organizational goals. The incumbent will support Flanagan's Purpose, Vision, Mission and Values in everything they do. Key Responsibilities:Leadership and Team Management:
  • Provide strong leadership to the transportation team, fostering a positive and collaborative work environment.
  • Recruit, train, and develop a high-performing team.
  • Set performance goals, provide regular feedback, and conduct performance evaluations.
  • Encourage a culture of accountability, professionalism, and continuous improvement.
  • Provide positive influence and motivation to leaders and teams outside of direct reporting relationships.
  • Manage change effectively to ensure minimal disruption to business operations and positive impact to operational successes
Driver Management:
  • Oversee a team of driver supervisors, the day-to-day operations, ensuring on-time delivery and exceptional customer service.
  • Develop and implement driver-training programs to enhance skills, improve safety, and promote operational excellence.
  • Monitor driver performance metrics, such as on-time delivery, fuel efficiency, and customer satisfaction.
  • Address driver performance issues promptly and implement corrective actions as necessary.
Equipment Management:
  • Oversee maintenance and repair of the company's fleet and other equipment.
  • Develop and execute a preventive maintenance program to minimize downtime and ensure maximum equipment reliability.
  • Collaborate with vendors and suppliers to ensure timely availability of parts and services.
  • Monitor equipment utilization and recommend strategies for optimizing efficiency and reducing costs.
Safety and Compliance:
  • Develop and enforce comprehensive safety policies and procedures, ensuring compliance with federal, provincial, and local regulations.
  • Conduct regular safety audits and inspections to identify and mitigate potential risks.
  • Collaborate with Health and Safety to promote a safety-first culture.
  • Ensure all incidents are investigated and corrective measures are implemented.
Performance Monitoring and Reporting:
  • Develop and maintain key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure the effectiveness and efficiency of transportation operations.
  • Analyze data and identify trends to drive continuous improvement initiatives.
Required Qualifications:
  • Minimum 8 years' experience required in a similar role within distribution and transportation.
  • Strong knowledge of regulatory issues, MTO WSIB, Ministry of Labour, CFIA etc.
  • A varied background in food distribution, transportation, logistics, maintenance, and financial management resulting in total capability and effectiveness to manage in a multi location operation.
  • Knowledge of Six Sigma, process improvement methodologies.
  • College or University diploma/degree with focus on business, operations management, transportation and logistics.
  • Knowledge of quality (TQM, Six Sigma, HACCP. SQF, BRC, or other Food Safety accreditations) methodology and experience in implementing such programs in an operational environment.
  • Extensive experience working with Transportation Management Systems.
  • Experience in food service or cold chain strongly preferred.
  • Valid Class G Driver's license and use of a personal vehicle for regular business travel to branch locations across Ontario.

  • Experienced leader, influencing various cross-functional teams.
  • Strong working knowledge of MS Office products including Excel.
  • Must consistently demonstrate a high level of integrity, dependability and professionalism at all times.
